Our favorite day of the year is nearly upon us, World Wide Knit In Public Day (WWKIPD for short). Not that we needed a dedicated day to get our knits out in public places… oo-er!

But just in case you are not a regular bus brioche stitcher, or a park purl worker, we have put together a list of tips for you to ensure you are well equ-WIP-ped (Ha!) for some project time outside of the house.

DON’T bring too many projects

Do you really need to bring that sweater project? And that cabled throw? AND those sock projects?! Prioritise, consider the weight and size of the project, along with any accessories or tools you’ll need to make progress.

Tips and tricks for knitting in public safely

DON’T use long straight needles on busy public transport

Keep your elbows tucked in and other people’s personal space intact! To avoid accidental collisions, why not use circular needles and work back and forth, the same way you would with straight needles.

DO keep your WIP in a project bag

Loose balls and castaway cakes could lead to a knitty mishap! Keep everything in one place with a cute project bag, or if you received your order in one of our organza bags, store your knits in there!

DO have your pattern to hand

Whether you have your trusty print out from your pattern library, or you have our free LoveKnitting app for iOS, make sure you have a copy of your pattern with you on the day. There’s nothing worse than forgetting your pattern and carrying around a project you can’t make any progress on!

Some other top tips include:

Snacks – No one wants to knit on an empty stomach, so make sure you’re nearby somewhere for lunch, or bring along some sandwiches.

Weather – Does the weather where you are stay true to the forecast? Lucky you! For those of us who live in slightly more unpredictable climates (we’re looking at you, the UK!) then a possible indoor location for your public knitting is crucial. Make sure you have a backup plan!

Chat – Don’t be shy, you may find that knitting in a public place draws the attention of passers by. Use the opportunity to talk about your crafting passion, you never know who you may inspire to pick up some needles!

But most of all, HAVE FUN!
