stringstrandstrung: About a month ago, a friend of a friend…

About a month ago, a friend of a friend commissioned me to make a braided headband that ties at the back of the head. She asked if I had any other designs aside from those she saw at my table at the event where we met. I said she could look for other designs on the net, send me the picture, and I’ll see what I could do. I emphasized to search for crochet because I haven’t mastered knitting yet. Lo and behold she sends me a picture of a knitted braided headband. Yey. Not. So I’ve been putting off making the thing. I thought of making the headband using crochet, but since I’m OC, I know that somewhere along the way, I will get annoyed and frog the thing. So I finally picked up my knitting needles. I researched for free patterns as reference. I crocheted the ends so I could have a nice place to put the string.

I used a size 3 knitting needle (3.25 mm) and a 3.5mm crochet hook. For the yarn I used Red Heart Super Saver in Mid Brown.

For the crochet edging:

Right side facing, insert through first stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, chain 1, sc on same stitch, ch1, skip 3 sts, [hdc, dc, dc, picot, dc, hdc] all in next st, ch2 (not a mistake: two chains look better than just one), skip 3 sts, sc on last st. Repeat on other side.

For the string:

Cut about an arms length. Fold in half. With right side facing, insert hook through the picot, pull up a loop, and pull the tail end of the strand through the loop. Trim if necessary. Then tie a knot on the ends. Repeat on the other side.
